This is the trap machine that sets the standards in competition trap shooting. These dependable traps were used at the Grand American from 1955. This event used 75 of these traps having thrown more than 3,000,000 targets during the nine day shoot!

Western hand-loaded machines for trap came in three versions. Model X, XS and XE also noted as trap series V1524, V1579 and V1581 respectively. A serial number is stamped above the master toggle switch starting with either X, XS, or XE plus the number.

There were more than 16,000 Western X Model traps manufactured by Western from 1950 to 1990. This model was used for registered ATA or PITA American trap. The XS model was modified for horizontal and vertical oscillation for use in continental, bunker, automatic ball trap and wobble trap. The XE model was wired for 220 V AC 50 HZ.

All models feature instantaneous, push-button random release. Throw single targets or doubles. Easy, economical installation. Simple hand adjustments for distance, windage, and elevation. Convenient master switch. Trap includes interrupter to conform with ATA rules and X400 trap release.

Trap is powered by 115/230 V AC and features a 1/3 HP 1725 RPM cocking motor that draws 8 amps. In remote applications, these traps are powered by generator or inverter with a deep cycle battery.

Targets are commonly released by a "puller" through use of a hand-held control switch (X400) on the end of a 100 ft. pull cord which is wired to the trap. Foot pedals, voice activation and other wireless remote systems are also now available and compatible with the trap. These items are listed in our store as accessories.

The X Model will oscillate side to side with fully random target release. The shooter selects the desired presentation by inserting the angle adjusting screw into a rotating disc. When this screw is fastened in the center of the disc the trap will not oscillate. This position is reserved for doubles and throwing singles in a straight line for practice. There are also four different locations on the disc for Trap which varies the horizontal oscillation from between 35 to 94 degrees. Western Retro also makes a Wobble Kit (WK30) to provide vertical oscillation up to 30 degrees.

A Western trap (Model: X, XS, XE) requires a person or "trap boy" to manually load each clay pigeon onto the throwing arm. Over the past few years, this has become a safety and liability concern for shooting ranges. Not to mention, trap boys are an added labor expense and hard to find when you need one. Western Retro has solved these problems with the TrapLoader. We now manufacture three different TrapLoaders for personal, competitor and club use.

Western Retro provides complete restoration services, parts and accessories for your Western trap. You'll find further support on our online forum and newsletter. Manuals, wiring diagrams, field layouts and more are available for download in our store.

We also purchase used traps and provide customers the option to exchange theirs for one of our remanufactured machines.
